6 Smashing 'Thor: Love and Thunder' Fan Theories and Swag to Match

Scott Davis130

“You should have gone for the head!” The immortal words of Thanos just before he clicked his fingers and obliterated half the universe. Thor, having used Stormbreaker to puncture a hole in the Titan’s chest, thought he had won the battle. He had, but he and his fellow Avengers lost the war. Jump forward to 2023 and the mighty God of Thunder is a beer-swilling, video-game playing, slightly overweight shadow of his former self, but determined enough to help defeat Thanos once and for all in Avengers: Endgame. After his much-lauded “refresh” in Thor: Ragnarok (including a hair chop) fans are now hungry for more from the Asgardian. They’re in luck because Thor: Love and Thunder just wrapped filming and is due out in May 2022. So, while we have to wait a year to see it, we’re examining some of the early theories as to how Love and Thunder will play out — all presented with some specially selected swag to boot. Beginning with one very special limited edition figurine. Simply click on the link to buy.

So, just what is going to happen in Thor 4? The longest-running “series” inside the MCU (Captain America 4 will change that), the character’s mini-reinvention in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame reignited our love for the character, and with director Taika Waititi saying they’ve multiplied what Ragnarok gave us, we can definitely expect to be entertained. One theorist is set on the idea that Love and Thunder will be the MCU’s A Christmas Carol, with Thor having to revisit his past, present, and future as directed by the film’s big bad, Gorr The God Butcher (Christian Bale). With Gorr hating gods “with a passion” because they “failed him” and driven by the notion that gods, including Thor, must pay for their failings, Thor begins to question his worth in the universe.

Mania hit when Natalie Portman confirmed a reappearance in the MCU on stage at Comic-Con. Fans were salivating at the idea of Thor as a woman, and many have already started to map out her journey. One theory suggests that the film will begin in the present-day, post-Blip, and see Jane suffering from cancer after her possession by the Aether. Here, a hammer from an alternate timeline that has links with an alien planet destroyed by the Celestials, will choose Jane and imbue her with the powers of Thor, setting her up to take over the mantle when Thor retires after they defeat Gorr and his minions. With a fresh, younger generation coming through the ranks in new shows and films, could Jane become part of the New Avengers?

3. Marvel Thor The Mighty T-Shirt

Marvel Thor The Mighty T-Shirt

Doesn’t Mjolnir look good on this sick T-shirt?! Speaking of the trusty hammer, the last time we saw it in the main, aka “sacred”, timeline, it had been destroyed by Hela before Thor and Rocket returned to 2013 to bring the “past” version back through the Quantum Realm to 2023 to help give Thor a fighting chance against Thanos – and so fans could go insane seeing Steve Rogers wield it spectacularly. Later, Rogers had to return Mjolnir and the “borrowed” Infinity Stones to their correct place in time and fans have been speculating about whether Steve will pass it over to Jane Foster. One theory continues the fan favourite idea that Steve is now on a secret moon base (mentioned in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) but kept Mjolnir on the moon for someone worthy to find in the future – namely Jane. Such an idea comes from Jason Aaron’s Thor comic series where it is left abandoned on the moon and not even Thor Odinson can lift it. Should the film have been called Thor: Love, Thunder, and Space?

While much of the hype surrounding Love and Thunder is about the return of Portman and the addition of Bale, one person who isn’t currently scheduled to appear is Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, who is still “alive” thanks to the time travel shenanigans of Endgame, allowing the 2012 version to escape and get his own show. But maybe – just maybe – we will see him after all, at least that is what one fan theory posits, which suggests that the show will have links with this film, as well as (the already mooted) connections to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and WandaVision. Here, the theory has it that the Loki series will be a “historical” show where the Time and Space stones will play a large part, allowing Loki to travel back to before the events of Thor (2011). He will use his future knowledge to help (yes, HELP) Odin, win his trust and wield Mjolnir before Jane Foster takes it from him down the line. Think Back to the Future Part II but with Infinity Stones instead of sports almanacs and, while we’d love to see the God of Mischief another time, it’s likely he will be dead “again” by the show’s finale. Unless…

The big idea of the fourth film revolves around the title: Love and Thunder. Love for Thor and Jane, and for Valkyrie, Thunder with a new Thor. It also points no doubt to how loud and bombastic the film will be. But will that love extend to a Thor family? One theory suggests that the reason for Thor and Jane’s real break up after the events of Thor: The Dark World (a ballpark date of 2015 is mentioned) is that Jane discovered that she was pregnant and, because of who the father was, was immediately scared that the child may always be in danger and would leave her on Earth one day. Fast forward to post-Endgame, and their child is now 10 years old and in danger, which alerts Thor and, because of that (in one comic book, Thor has a daughter) becomes the catalyst for the film, embodying the title of the film even more so. In addition, the theorist also suggests that this is how Loki will finally be laid to rest, performing the ultimate sacrifice to protect his niece/nephew. Isn’t he dead already?! Oh, wait…

6. Marvel Star-Lord Guardians of Galaxy 2 Pose Graphic T-Shirt

Marvel Star-Lord Guardians of Galaxy 2 Pose Graphic T-Shirt

It’s a pretty packed extravaganza, cast-wise for Taika Waititi’s second outing with the God of Thunder but for fans, however, it’s the appearance of the Guardians of the Galaxy – who we saw Thor jet off into space with at the end of Avengers: Endgame – that is what could be really exciting. But what are they up to?

Well, there are many theories: one person suggests the film will open with a Rocky-style montage of Thor and Star-Lord working out together to help lose the former’s “Dad Bod” (a VERY Waititi idea, for sure); another suggests we may finally get to see Adult Groot once more after nearly a decade without him; while another spotted what could be a Kree on set. Aside from some glimpses in previous films, the Kree as a race are still yet to have their moment. Lastly, we know that “Asgard Theatre” is back with Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively, with Melissa McCarthy playing Hela for a Ragnarok reenactment. Could they also feature the Guardians and the events of Infinity War and Endgame? You know we’d love to see it!

We have a little wait for all the secrets to be revealed but don’t be surprised if we get our first glimpse of the film with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (September) or Spider-Man: No Way Home (December) in trailer form. Thor: Love and Thunder is set for release on May 6th, 2022.
