4. Best Classic Horror TV Series: The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone: The Complete Series DVD

If you’ve got plenty of time on your hands, get lost in The Twilight Zone with this box set featuring all 156 episodes of the classic horror TV series, recently revived by Jordan Peele. The show created by Rod Serling is famous for its shocking twists that stick with the audience long after switching the TV off… unless, of course, 2020 is actually a real-life episode of the horror series we’re all trapped in. In which case, switching off the TV on the episode isn’t an option! But this would mean you join the likes of William Shatner, Burt Reynolds and Leonard Nimoy as guest stars of the show. Our personal favorite episode? Season 2, Episode 5: “The Invaders”. It’s got a relatively simple premise about tiny attackers assaulting an elderly woman on her own. The paranoia it weaves in is powerful, and the twist is masterfully managed.

Resident Evil 3

Nemesis is absolutely terrifying as he constantly stalks Jill Valentine throughout her mission to find a vaccine for the unstoppable virus ravaging the city. Sure, the general zombies lurking around the place are scary, but Nemesis’s attacks in the horror video game are undeniably intense. That opening moment where he chases Jill down the corridor in her apartment perfectly captures how the genre flourishes on consoles. Although we have to wonder, who’d win in a fight between Nemesis or Mr. X from Resident Evil 2? Guess you’ll just have to buy both and compare the villains for yourself… What a shame.

9. Best New Horror Movie: Get Out

Get Out Blu-ray + Digital

Jordan Peele’s directorial debut blew audiences away when it arrived in 2017 and while it’s not a stereotypical slasher or supernatural shocker, the way Peele tackles and deconstructs the racism so deeply embedded in America makes it nothing short of a masterpiece. Get Out is a socially (and politically) relevant tale that examines white privilege, as well as touching on racial profiling. Consequently, it will feel close to home for many audiences. The way it throws horror into the mix is an impressive feat of writing and execution from Peele, and it is undeniably one of the best new horror movies guaranteed to shake audiences to their core.

10. Best Classic Horror Movie: Nosferatu

Nosferatu Deluxe Edition DVD

Okay sure, Nosferatu is a bit of a Dracula rip-off. But that makes the film no less an incredible feat for a 1922 silent film. Don’t be intimidated. Director F. W. Murnau manages to adapt the mythology into a fascinating piece of cinema. The shot of Count Orlok creeping up the stairs is one of the most iconic moments in horror history. Sure, compared to modern films it might not be one of the scariest horror movies of all time, but its influence on hundreds of filmmakers over the years shouldn’t be understated. Don’t disappoint Count Orlok. Not at that price for a 2-disc special edition.

12. Best Family-Friendly Horror Movie: The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas Blu-ray and Digital

Want a movie the family can all enjoy together? Look no further than stop-motion classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Directed by Henry Selick, the stop-motion specialist behind Coraline, and produced and conceived by Tim Burton, The Nightmare Before Christmas follows Halloween Town “Pumpkin King” Jack Skellington’s attempts to hijack Christmas. Idiosyncratic, charming, and just a little bit unsettling in equal measure, it’s a film that has so far resisted the sequel treatment — largely because Burton wants to preserve its uniqueness. Add even more fun to your Halloween family viewing, with this sing-along edition.
