Happy Star Wars Day: Celebrate With Facts and Merch You Might Not Know Existed

Scott Davis0

It’s Star Wars Day! That special time of year where cosplay is par for the course, the lightsabers come out, and we all debate just which film – or, indeed, television show – is the best over a nice cold glass of Blue Milk, or Han Solo’s favourite drink, a Flameout.

So, to celebrate this momentous occasion, here are just some of the incredible Star Wars merchandise goodies you can get your hands on this Star Wars Day, as well as some little-known facts about their history in the galaxy far, far away…

1. Royal Selangor Pewter Chess Set

Royal Selangor

Star Wars Pewter Chess Set by Royal Selangor

Royal Selangor

Dejarik—or holochess—was a popular two-player game in the Star Wars universe in which teams of holographic creatures were pitted against one another. Most versions of the game require each player to pick four monsters with which to play, though there was a variation in which five pieces were used either side of the board. Each character has different abilities, much like in chess, or even Dungeons and Dragons. You can get a full breakdown of the gameplay and rules on the Dejarik page of Wookieepedia.

While you might not yet have grasped the rules of Dejarik—or found a way to play it authentically—may we recommend this stunning pewter chess set instead? Though you may not want to play with it—it’s a work of art!

2. Wedge Antilles Battle Simulation Helmet – Star Wars: The Black Series by Hasbro

Wedge Antilles Battle Simulation Helmet – Star Wars: The Black Series by Hasbro

We know we have to write these things in a professional, coherent, and practical way – but WOW! We took one look at this amazing new gadget and our jaws dropped to the floor. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to suit up as Wedge Antilles from the Rogue Squadron, wonder no more thanks to this premium, one-of-a-kind helmet redesign. Wedge, of course, was part of the Resistance fighter squadron but he hailed from the planet Cordelia, where he spent his youth working at fuel depots and farms before becoming a pilot. He would later join the Skystrike Academy under the squadron moniker TIE SS-2-5. He soon became disillusioned and was recruited by the Republic serving at the Battles of Yavin, Hoth, and Endor. But it wasn’t all “plane” sailing for the veteran pilot: did you know during his first fight simulator test, he only lasted for roughly ten seconds? He has come a long way since.

With built-in sound and light systems and effects, this highly detailed rendering of Wedge’s helmet allows you to fully immerse yourself in Star Wars lore as you imagine fighting the battles you have seen on-screen.

3. LEGO Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid 75306 Collectible Building Toy, New 2021 (683 Pieces)

LEGO Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid 75306 Collectible Building Toy, New 2021

Hoth. It’s cold, coarse, rough, and irritating – and it gets everywhere. Wait, no, sorry, that’s sand. We always get those confused. A pale blue orb floating in space, the wintery surroundings of the planet became the temporary home of the Alliance before Darth Vader homed in and descended with brute force. After the destruction of the Death Star and the scattering of the Rebels, the Empire had to think on its feet to find them, so they used the Probe Droids that had first been used (as far we know) by Darth Maul on Tatooine to find Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice.

This incredibly detailed Imperial Probe Droid comes with a transparent, brick-built pole to “suspend” it above a buildable snowy scene. Just watch out for Wampas. They’ll get ya.

4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Pop! Vinyl Figure #270

Star Wars

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Obi Wan Kenobi Pop! Vinyl Figure #270

Star Wars

“Help stop the Separatists!” shouts the description for this superb figure of iconic Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fandom excitement is at fever pitch in anticipation of Ewan McGregor returning to portray young old Ben in the upcoming Disney+ series after years of rumours, fibs, and maybes. This nifty little Pop! aptly commemorates McGregor’s reprisal of the role, and comes complete with fight uniform, textbook beard (“Hello there!”), and Kenobi’s legendary blue lightsaber. He had seen many battles and fought countless fights even before he first met Anakin, but did you know he and his Master, Qui-Gon, spent a year on the planet Mandalore? They were tasked with protecting Duchess Satine Kryze – with whom Kenobi would also form a romantic attachment – and had to fend off a bounty of bounty hunters during a Civil War.

A young Anakin Skywalker is also available as a Pop! figure, so buy one of each, get some tomato juice (or equivalent) and some cardboard and recreate that infamous fight scene on Mustafar. Just remember to take the high ground. It’s much safer.

5. Star Wars Day ''May the 4th Be With You'' 2021 T-Shirt for Adults

Star Wars Day ''May the 4th Be With You'' 2021 T-Shirt for Adults

Whether you mark Star Wars Day with a virtual watch-along, bake some Star Wars-themed treats, marathon the entire film series from Episode I to Episode IX, or partake in some cosplay fun, just make sure you do something to celebrate the pioneering franchise. Did you know that, according to the history books, “May the Fourth Be With You” was first referred to in Britain when Margaret Thatcher took over as Prime Minister? We reckon that was probably George Lucas’s ultimate wish. The first organised Star Wars Day, however, took place in 2011 in Toronto, Canada, and included a fan quiz and costume contest.

For us, there’s nothing better than watching our favourite moments from the films and television shows—and we’ll definitely be catching The Bad Batch which premieres appropriately on May the Fourth on Disney+. We’ll also be wearing something “themed”, such as this T-shirt that includes designs of stormtroopers, Rebel Pilots, X-Wings, and the Millenium Falcon all brought together on this navy-blue stunner.

6. Star Wars I Am a Jedi Little Golden Book

Star Wars I Am a Jedi Little Golden Book

We all wish we were Jedi, don’t we? Exploring the galaxy wearing cool outfits, embarking on thrilling quests, and, of course, getting to wield a lightsaber. The Jedi have been around for thousands of years – way before we met a Skywalker or a Rey. The order was first realised by The Prime Jedi on the planet Ahch-To around 25,000 BBY and was first seen on screen in a mosaic of Jedi in 2017’s The Last Jedi. In fact, in The Phantom Menace, George Lucas was initially going to explore the origins of the Jedi but decided to focus on Anakin’s story instead.

In Christopher Nicholas’s gorgeous, colourful and exciting book, all ages can transport themselves into the world of Star Wars and follow along with Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and more. The book features some wonderful retro illustrations and a story that families can enjoy over and over again.
